Combi boilers
A combi (combination) boiler heats water directly from the mains on demand, with no separate hot water cylinder or cold water tank needed.
- Compact, since there is no cylinder or tank to house.
- Hot water is available instantly at the tap without waiting for a tank to heat up.
- Flow rate can drop if more than one hot outlet is used at the same time.
- Common in smaller properties or homes with one bathroom.
System boilers
A system boiler heats water that is stored in a hot water cylinder, but most of the major components are built into the boiler itself rather than in the loft.
- Works well where several taps or a bath and shower may be used around the same time.
- Needs an airing cupboard or similar space for the cylinder, but usually no loft tank.
- Hot water is stored ready to use, though it can run out if demand is heavy before it reheats.
Conventional (regular) boilers
A conventional boiler uses both a hot water cylinder and a cold water storage tank, typically in the loft, along with a feed and expansion tank.
- Suits larger homes with multiple bathrooms and higher hot water demand.
- Often the simplest option to keep when replacing an existing conventional system like-for-like.
- Takes up more space than a combi or system boiler and depends on gravity-fed loft tanks.
What influences the right choice
- The number of bathrooms and how often hot water is needed at more than one point at once.
- Whether you already have a cylinder or loft tanks, since keeping the same type is usually more straightforward.
- Available space, including loft access and airing cupboard capacity.
- Water pressure and flow rate from the mains supply.
